Most people can only enroll in or change their health insurance during the annual Open Enrollment Period. However, certain life events can trigger a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), allowing you to make changes outside the regular window.
Qualifying Life Events
You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you:
- Lose existing coverage: Job loss, aging off a parent's plan, or losing Medicaid eligibility
- Get married or divorced
- Have or adopt a baby
- Move to a new area with different plan options
- Experience a change in income that affects subsidy eligibility
- Gain citizenship or lawful presence in the U.S.
- Leave incarceration
How Long Do You Have?
In most cases, you have 60 days from the qualifying event to enroll in new coverage. Some events allow you to enroll before the event (like getting married), while others require you to wait until after (like having a baby).
Medicare Special Enrollment Periods
Medicare has its own SEP rules. You may be able to enroll or make changes if you:
- Move out of your plan's service area
- Lose employer coverage
- Qualify for Extra Help (Low Income Subsidy)
- Have certain chronic conditions (for Special Needs Plans)
